Joseph Harper is a self taught artist living in Oxfordshire, England. He is inspired by the classic impressionists - Joaquin Sorolla and John Singer-Sargent and post impressionists Edward Hopper and Edward Seago. His paintings have a focus in particular on light values, harmonic colours and nature.

Initially painting was a way to relax and escape for a few hours, but as more people saw his artwork, he subsequently started to take commissions - usually pictures of owner’s houses, favourite landscapes or scenes and then as art for commercial premises / offices. It was during a trip to Cornwall, painting “en plein air” on the cliff tops, when a passerby wanted to buy the painting there and then, that he decided to create a website and start selling more broadly. He’s not a fan of social media and was dragged on to it, and even this website is a labour of love! He’s happy to chat directly about what you’re looking for and will happily liaise with you away from this website!

Almost immediately after launching in March 2020 he has enjoyed success in international competitions.

  • He had 3 paintings on a long list of 442 paintings out of 5,700 entries in 2020 in the Jackson’s International Painting Competition

  • He then made the last 42 shortlist from 8,690 entries in 2021 in the same competition

  • He was also invited in to the exclusive House & Garden magazine’s emerging artists edition in Spring 2021

He has upcoming gallery exhibitions in Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Gloucestershire in 2022 - watch this space!

You can see his art on display at The Hart Street Tavern in Henley on Thames, the Bottle & Glass Inn, Binfield Heath and the Cherry Tree, Stoke Row.

Those who already own one of his works are delighted to be joined by other collectors, especially as their collection value increases. And with your purchase - THANK YOU and welcome to the Harper Prints & Oils family!

You may have mixed views on the science, or being preached at about changing your ways, but it is undeniable that our world is changing. We’re keen to play our part, by being a bit more friendly to our planet in a way that doesn’t ask more of you than buying what you already would have to give something back.

For each product purchased through this website, £5 will be donated to our chosen charity partner - World Land Trust (www.worldlandtrust.org). Every £5 donation goes towards their "Plant a Tree” programme, which funds the nurturing, planting, and protecting of one tree, that will help restore a forest for wildlife that has been lost to deforestation.  All of our paper and packaging is carefully selected to be from sustainable sources and fully recyclable.

We will review our chosen charities regularly, and if you have a request or a suggestion - please send an email, subscribe to our mailing list or keep up to date through our instagram page - @Harperprintsandoils
